State Senator
State Senator and State Representative plates first appeared in 1953 when a company hoping to secure a license plate manufacturing contract with the state passed them out free to the state legislators. The solons used them that year even though there was no legal authority for them to do so. By the time they realized they needed to pass a law to legalize the plates the 1953 legislative session was over, and because the legislature met only in odd numbered years, they had to wait until 1955. The needed law was in fact passed in 1955, but 1954 had come and gone without the legislators getting their coveted special plates, and therefore no such plates exist for that year. |
